Those of you who are interested in applying systems thinking in organisations and projects, this is for you.

I had a look to Cynefin after a long time and I though it would be good to position Celkee Insight with the Cynefin context.

The Cynefin sense making model explains nicely how according to the situation you are in you should think and analyse differently and apply different decision making practices.

Celkee Insight is typically used in challenging environments for visualising and distributing tacit data and accelerating the social process making sense of the situation.

If you are not familiar with Cynefin, please do not read further. Alternatively, you can watch an 8 min Cynefin summary from here. You receive an incredible amount of wisdom.

In normal situations people are in the Disordered space thinking of their actions based on their personal preferences. However, one approach does not fit all situations. People should choose their actions according to the domain they are in. Celkee Insight can help in understanding the domain they are in and also helping on some actions within the domains.

Simple domain

Here you should apply the sense-categorise-respond -model since the cause and effect relationships exist and they are predictable and repeatable.

Thorough the visibility to tacit data provided by Celkee Insight, it helps in

  • monitoring the perceived efficiency of deployed best practices
  • finding improvement ideas and new innovation to improve the best practices
  • making sure you do not accidentally slip from simple domain to the chaos by becoming too compleacent with your best practices

Complicated domain

Here you should apply sense-analyse-respond -model since the cause and effect relationships exist but they are complex.

Complicated issues need to be processed by good practices instead of best practices. The deployed practices need to be chosen close to the problem in order to avoid harmful micro-management.

Through the near real time visibility to tacit data provided by Celkee Insight, it helps in pinpointing the new complicated issues proactively and creating pressure to the right issue owners for starting to sense and analyse the issues early.

Complex domain

Here you should apply probe-sense-respond -model. In a case of a positive probe outcome the good practice is rapidly amplified and in case of negative outcome the practise is ramped-down fast.

Celkee Insight can help in bringing visibility to the probe impact and pinpoint a successful probe for amplification.

Chaotic domain

Here you should apply the act-sense-respond -model. Celkee Insight can help in gaining visibility to the applied actions and reveal feedback, ideas and innovation how to improve the actions.

So what?

I have noticed that the best leaders I know apply Cynefin model in practice (sometimes perhaps even without knowing the model). Celkee Insight helps nicely in sensing the result of actions, distributing related data and accelerating the social process for consuming the data. Understanding the model can help in driving the use of Celkee Insight to support leadership processes best, especially in change situations and complex projects.
